2: Analyze Energy (Sketch)

Stage 2 of Energy Analysis (PM)

Determines the energy demand and use of a building based on spatial layout and initial estimates of building construction.
Energy analyst is considered to be able to influence the overall spatial and envelope design of a building at this stage.

Process Overview

In the following subsections each process element will be described in more detail.

2.1: Derive Building Information

Type:

Task

Description:

At this stage, it is assumed that a building model with geometry is available. This provides a proposed building layout including space configuration and outline layout of building elements that allows proposed positions of walls and doors to be determined.

From building model provided, derive:

  • the building location;
  • the building orientation;
  • space information including space name, function, area and design requirements.
  • adjacent building shape, location and orientation

At this stage in the design, it is assumed that space information is available and that overall construction principles can be determined (see separate task) but that the proportions of glazing within spaces is proposed but not yet fixed. These are proposed by the energy analyst in conjunction with the building design role. The building model then allows perimeter lengths to be determined in conjunction with which glazing proportions can be proposed. For instance, if the perimeter length of a wall is 20m and the expected room height is 3m then the wall area is 60m 2. If the glazing proportion proposed is 20% then this gives a window area in total of 12m 2 which might be disposed as 3 windows of 2m x 2m (4m 2) each.

2.2: Acquire Space Type Data

Type:

Task

Description:

May reuse type data from programming phase. Update as appropriate. Tie in type data to actual proposed spaces such that, for instance:
Office 1 is a space of type 'Office A'. It has an actual proposed area of 157.6 m2 against a type requirement of 150m 2. Therefore, the area can be validated.

2.3: Acquire Construction Type Data

Type:

Task

Description:

Construction type data refers to the 'type' approach to be used for the building at this stage. Data required for construction types at this stage is for thermal transmittance/response for demand and energy consumption calculation.
It is unlikely that, structure and mechanical systems constructions will be known at this stage.

2.4: Acquire Technical Solutions Data

Type:

Task

Description:

Acquire information as available concerning technical solutions including:

  • Lighting data
  • Data about other electrical appliances
  • Mechanical services plant and equipment.

2.5: Analyze Energy Demand and Comfort

Type:

Task

Description:

Energy demand is the heating and/or cooling load that may be used for the purposes of determining system provisions. Comfort is the assessment of air flow requirement in terms of minimum fresh air and temperature. This will feed back into the technical solutions type selection e.g. whether an all air or air/water system is used to achieve the comfort levels required. At this stage, energy demand and comfort will be determined for each space and the total demand obtained for the building (or parts of the building).

2.6: Select Energy Source

Type:

Task

Description:

Selection of an energy source for the building for the purposes of energy consumption analysis and costing. At this stage, it is expected that a decision will be made about the particular energy source to be adopted for the building.

2.7: Analyze Energy Consumption

Type:

Task

Description:

Uses an appropriate analysis method and determines the energy consumption of the building.

2.8: Verify Target Compliance

Type:

Task

Description:

Tests the energy consumption from analysis against the targeted energy consumption requirement determined from the building energy target setting. Ensures that the target has been achieved. Reworks data requirements and analyses until target has been achieved or it has been demonstrated that it cannot be achieved.

2.9: Estimate Energy Cost

Type:

Task

Description:

Determines the energy cost of a building over the time scales required based on tariff (cost) information available from the source provider.
