2: Analyze Energy (Sketch)
Stage 2 of Energy Analysis (PM)
Determines the energy demand and use of a building based on spatial layout and initial estimates of building construction.
Energy analyst is considered to be able to influence the overall spatial and envelope design of a building at this stage.

Process Overview
In the following subsections each process element will be described in more detail.
2.1: Derive Building Information
At this stage, it is assumed that a building model with geometry is available. This provides a proposed building layout including space configuration and outline layout of building elements that allows proposed positions of walls and doors to be determined. From building model provided, derive:
At this stage in the design, it is assumed that space information is available and that overall construction principles can be determined (see separate task) but that the proportions of glazing within spaces is proposed but not yet fixed. These are proposed by the energy analyst in conjunction with the building design role. The building model then allows perimeter lengths to be determined in conjunction with which glazing proportions can be proposed. For instance, if the perimeter length of a wall is 20m and the expected room height is 3m then the wall area is 60m 2. If the glazing proportion proposed is 20% then this gives a window area in total of 12m 2 which might be disposed as 3 windows of 2m x 2m (4m 2) each. |
2.2: Acquire Space Type Data
May reuse type data from programming phase. Update as appropriate. Tie in type data to actual proposed spaces such that, for instance: |
2.3: Acquire Construction Type Data
Construction type data refers to the 'type' approach to be used for the building at this stage. Data required for construction types at this stage is for thermal transmittance/response for demand and energy consumption calculation. |
2.4: Acquire Technical Solutions Data

Acquire information as available concerning technical solutions including:
