3: Analyze Energy (Full Concept)

Stage 3 of Energy Analysis (PM)

Determines the energy demand and use of a building based on the detailed spatial layout and with knowledge of the building elements used and their construction. The population of spaces in terms of people, equipment and technical solutions is known at this stage so that all constituent parts of the energy demand are taken into account.

Process Overview

In the following subsections each process element will be described in more detail.

3.1: Derive Building Information

Type:

Task

Description:

At this stage in the design, it is assumed that all geometric information about spaces and elements that constitute the building is available together with all related located information about the building and adjacent buildings. The proportions of glazing within spaces are considered to be fixed and shading that may be used on the building is proposed.

3.2: Acquire Construction Type Data

Type:

Task

Description:

Construction type data refers to the 'type' approach to be used for the building and technical solutions at this stage. Data required for construction types at this stage includes all data that is necessary for energy demand and analysis and includes thermal transmittance/response, infiltration and ventilation, power outputs etc.

3.3: Acquire Technical Solutions Data

Type:

Task

Description:

Acquire information concerning technical solutions including;

  • lighting data
  • data about other electrical appliances
  • mechanical services plant and equipment.

3.4: Acquire Usage Profile Data

Type:

Task

Description:

Usage profiles are concerned with the time based usage of spaces and provide information about miscellaneous heat gains to the space over time. These include:

  • Patterns of people within a space and their activities within the space
  • Patterns of machinery and equipment usage within the space
  • Patterns of artificial light usage within the space

3.5: Analyze Energy Demand and Comfort

Type:

Task

Description:

Energy demand is the heating and/or cooling load that may be used for the purposes of determining system provisions. At this stage, energy demand will be determined based on a complete knowledge of the building space and fabric layout with all constructions known. In addition, all contributions from people, lighting and equipment will be known and the time series profiles of their use established.

3.6: Zone spaces

Type:

Task

Description:

Group spaces into zones for optimization of thermal performance of the building and technical solutions.

3.7: Analyze Energy Consumption

Type:

Task

Description:

This is the assessment of actual energy consumption at the level that is relevant to the project stage. For full concept design, it is assumed that the energy source has been selected and therefore alternative energy use scenarios based on different fuel scenarios will not be required. All contributions to energy provision including lights, people and equipment are considered to be fully taken into account. Energy consumption is considered to be based on simulation that responds to weather data and is dealt with on a time series basis (actual energy being consumed responding to external conditions and internal contributions).

2.8: Verify Target Compliance

Type:

Task

Description:

Tests the energy consumption from analysis against the targeted energy consumption requirement determined from the building energy target setting. Ensures that the target has been achieved. Reworks data requirements and analyses until target has been achieved or it has been demonstrated that it cannot be achieved.

2.9: Estimate Energy Cost

Type:

Task

Description:

Determines the energy cost of a building over the time scales required based on tariff (cost) information available from the source provider.
