North America
This area of the IDM Wiki contains North America IDM components that satisfy the requirements of users in the United States and Canada.
Within the United States, the repository of requirements defined by the National Building Information Model Standard ([www.nbims.org]) Development Team will be posted under this topic, by project. NBIMS is not a competing activity of IAI, rather it is the current name of the effort to define open-standard user-driven exchange definitions using three interlocking standards: the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), the International Framework for Dictionaries (IFD), and the Information Delivery Manual (IDM). NBIMS projects that complete their Exchange Requirement and Functional Part definitions will be posted on this wiki. Expected exchange requirements, based on upcoming projects may also be identified.
Early Design Information Exchange (EDIE) Project
During the process of facility programming, planning, and early design, the owner's requirements, especially large owners, are provided in many forms: design and construction criteria, functional requirements, functional adjacencies and programmatic area allowances. These requirements are handed off to the planner/designer to collate into a cohesive plan including building code, site, cost, and engineering requirements, The goal of creating an Early Design (ED) view is to capture these in a comprehensive and computable exchange format to pass to down-stream technologies such as design modeling, and engineering analysis technologies. Once in a standard computable format, this early design information can be used to validate proposed design solutions against the owner's requirements. It also provides the ability to compare alternative designs for life-cycle costing and other best practice design solutions.

Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBIE) Project
Following the completion of capital projects, a truck load of paper or large electronic files are provided to the facility manager. These documents describe everything needed for effective maintenance, operations, and asset management. Transforming paper or electronic images into useful information may require as much as $50,000 per project. The vital information needed for effective facility maintenance, operation, and asset management is not being efficiently captured as it is created. COBIE will define the IDMS required to supporting the direct software information exchange for small renovation and capital projects.
