| | Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a new approach to describing and displaying the information required for the design, construction and operation of constructed facilities. It can bring together the numerous threads of different information used in construction into a single operating environment - reducing, and often eliminating, the need for the many types of paper document currently in use. |

| | However to use BIM effectively and for benefit to be unlocked, the quality of communication between different participants in the construction process needs significant improvement. If the information required is available when it is needed and the quality of information is satisfactory, the construction process will itself be significantly improved. |

| | For this to happen, there must be a common understanding of the building processes and of the information that is needed for and results from their execution. |
| | |
| | IDM captures (and progressively integrates) business process whilst at the same time providing detailed specifications of the information that a user fulfilling a particular role would need to provide at a particular point within a project. To further support the user information exchange requirements specification, IDM also proposes a set of modular model functions that can be reused in the development of support for further user requirements. |

| | If you are new to the IDM try out the [Tutorial] for a quick introduction to the methodology. After reading this a user should understand the basic concepts of the IDM Methodology as well as understand the structure and purpose of the different [IDMs]. Even though readers should be able to undestand the basic building blocks which enables the IDM capabilities after reading the [Tutorial], a look at the [IDM Methodology|IDM Methodology] pages will provide a more in depth description on the subject. |

| | The [IDMs] are based on three types of _building blocks_; [A - Process Maps (PM)], [B - Exchange Requirements (ER)] and [C - Functional Parts (FP)]. The Process Map attempts to identify all business processes and tasks throughout a buildings lifecycle. For each of the identified elements in the process map, an [Exchange Requirement (ER)|B - Exchange Requirements (ER)] describes the information which enables the Business Process as well as the expected output (the result) from the same process. Because the [_Exchange Requirements_|B - Exchange Requirements (ER)] are written to meet user groups with different roles, all technical details are described in the [C - Functional Parts (FP)]. Besides describing the information as more general _Concepts_ which can be reused, a mapping to the [IFC|http://www.iai-international.org] model is also provided. |
